Life spam of a car battery and alternator...Please tell me how long is expected...?

I had a flood in my street and that did damage the battery of my car, as well as the alternator. My car is about 4 years of use and the mechanic told me that I was in the right time to change all these, coz sooner or later I will have it damaged by usage as times passes. But the change was due to the flood and now I feel that I should have been more careful about my car and not to park it in the near street while a tropical storm passed and flooded it all and I did pay a big note!Life spam of a car battery and alternator...Please tell me how long is expected...?It's %26quot;life SPAN%26quot;, spam is a type of canned meat. Anyway the battery was probably ready to be changed because four to six years is about the life span of a decent battery. The alternator on the other-hand should probably only be replaced once or maybe twice during the whole life of the car. I'm sure the water had something to do with the alternator failure. This may however not be all the electrical problems your going to experience from this flood damage, especially if the car was started before it was completely dried out. There could be damage to circuit boards, relays, switches, and interior and exterior lighting. I would try to keep it out of the tropical storms especially if you have a lot invested in it. GOOD LUCK!!!Life spam of a car battery and alternator...Please tell me how long is expected...?its 50-50 if you have been driving for 5 years on that Battery, you are lucky car battery's life is between 3-5 years, so that needed to be changed, alternator, that is water damage, but look at it this way there was nothing you could do about it, and you are lucky it just came to that.Life spam of a car battery and alternator...Please tell me how long is expected...?about three to four years on a battery. The alternator should last about ten years, but it was water damaged so it needs to be changed anyway.

What are signs that I need to replace my battery cables and car battery?

Well I just want to know what performance issues that will occur that will indicate that I need a new battery and performance issues that would indicate that I to change my battery cables...What are signs that I need to replace my battery cables and car battery? The battery is used mainly to start the car, otherwise most, if not all, of the power is coming from the alternator. If you are having trouble starting your car, you might have a battery problem (but keep in mind, if the alternator is going bad, it may not be charging the battery properly.)

If you suspect a bad battery, most places that sell batteries will also test them for you for free. Take your car over and have it checked out. A lot of them can also check your alternator for you, as well.

If the cables look rotted or damaged, ou should change them. Check that the clamps are clean and making good electrical contact wit hthe battery posts. If you don't know what I mean or how to check this, take your car over to your newest car parts store, ask them to check your battery, alternator and battery cables for you. They will check it for you and help you get whatever parts you need to fix it up.What are signs that I need to replace my battery cables and car battery?are your cables old? if you have to keep jump starting your car, your battery is most likely running out of juice

  • How do I modify a Radlines RC car?

My Radlines Fang buggy moves really slow for some odd reason. The batteries so far, should be fine. Maybe I need to check them but I did change the batteries in the car to new ones. The remote battery I have not changed but i wouldn't think it had anything to do with the speed. Although when the everything is turned on, after a few seconds the car goes backwards on its own.How do I modify a Radlines RC car? When your remote battery goes flat, the signal from the transmitter gets weaker and your car will be less responsive. A strong signal from another transmitter or CB broadcasts can affect your car's movements. Since this RC car may have either 27Mhz or 40 Mhz transmit/receive frequencies then do expect some stray transmissions.

Its best to replace the transmitter battery with fresh one but if that does not work either, then its time to go hobby grade!!

Are they trying to rip me off?

last friday i had my change oil..few minutes later the manager called me...he told me that i need to change my car battery and change this and change that(something from the engine)..blah blah blah.....

but my car is ONLY 3yrs very low millage(21,900)...

then, when i told him to write down whatever diagnosis he found in a piece of paper....instead of writing it down he told me he will just put it on my file so in the future i have on my record.

his he just trying sale me something??

how many yrs do i have to change battery???Are they trying to rip me off?It sounds like you went to one of the %26quot;quick change%26quot; oil change places. They push low price oil changes to get you in to sell filters, batteries and sometimes brakes at a steep price.

Normal life for an OEM battery is anywhere from 3 to 7 years.

Most auto parts stores will load test your battery for free with a computerized tester that will give a good / bad diagnosis and most will give the actual Cold Cranking Amps that the battery is currently producing.

Care should be taken to not run a battery once it tests bad on a computerized tester, because a failing battery will often ruin an alternator and vice versa.

I recommend steering clear of the %26quot;quick change%26quot; places and take the car to an actual mechanic. You will pay a little more but will get the eyes of a trained professional on your vehicle. Are they trying to rip me off?Go somewhere else for your oil change next time. Sounds like they are hoping for extra money from an unsuspecting customer. Are they trying to rip me off?He is trying to screw you - Stay far, far away from that shop.

No need to change a battery if nothing is wrong with it and they do not test batteries as a normal part of an oil change.

Also, since he would not give you a list, that is a major red-flag because he knows you will take it to someone you trust and they will tell you he is full of shyt....

Almost all oil change places will try to sell you extras - but most don't lie as blatantly as this guy did to you.Are they trying to rip me off?yup most likely trying to rip you off if you don't see anything wrong with the car when u drive nothing to worry about then. Are they trying to rip me off?It is not uncommon for you to have to change a battery every three years. However look in your owners manual and don't do any repairs that are not recommended in that book. Many people do what they tell them out of fear of not taking car of there vehicle. The manufacture will back you up 100 percent if you have a problem and you follow the maintenance guide in the owners manual. The reason he said he will put it on file is to cover his back (if you had a problem) with your Battery

How do you change a battery on a Peugeot 406?

I admit I'm useless when it comes to cars! I've got the new battery and I assume its a case of clipping it in and putting on the positive and negative wires but I'm worried about electricuting myself so please help! How do you change a battery on a Peugeot 406?A car battery is only 12 volts and this is such a low voltage that it will not be able to harm you.

There are a few points more to simply disconnecting the old battery and replacing it with the new one though.

Make sure you know your car radios security pin number as if you disconnect the battery you may find the radio will not work until the pin is re entered. There is a way around this if you get some jump leads you can swap batteries around without disconnecting power from the terminals and thereby not needing to re enter the pin number.

Simply be care full and you will be fine. How do you change a battery on a Peugeot 406?Make sure that the old and the new batteries have the positive and negative terminals in the same positions, sometimes they are on different sides. Motor locked up?

I have a Ford Escort LX 97. I left the dome light turned on for 8 hrs and when I tried to start my car back it worked but I needed a couple of tries (so the battery was low I presume).

I drove for 2hrs and the day after I couldn't start my car.

Jumpstarting worked fine. I got my battery tested and it said battery perfect.

Before forgetting the light on I never had any problems and the battery is 8 months old. Then I changed battery, and two days after I couldn't jump start the car again. Did I damage something?

The all situation seems weird because it started as a light draining out the battery, then I thought the alternator was not charging the battery but the battery was charged. Now it does not jumpstart at all.

I brought it to a car repairer and he said my motor is locked up and basically I have to change car. Is it possible? How could I have driven till home with a locked engine?

Seems the mechanic is not cheating me since he said better not to spend money on that.

ThanksMotor locked up?I would have someone get under the car and see if you can turn the crankshaft pulley. If you can turn it a few turns the engine is not locked up. If it doesn't turn at all, then it is.Motor locked up?the only way for that to happen is coencidence, I've never heard of a locked engine he may have mis diagnosed, you should pull the battery out of another car and see if that worksMotor locked up?My guess would be that your alternator is not recharging the battery especially if you can jump and run the car. Also, check that you belts are not loose or frayed that can also cause the alternator not to work properly.

You are correct, a dead battery will not cause the engine to cease up.

Good luck.Motor locked up?Does the starter engage when you try and start it? If not your starter may be locked up or just burnt out.Motor locked up?Alt. could have locked up and not let engine turn over.Motor locked up?I would definently get a second opinion. We had a garage try to tell us that our truck needed a new transmission, and drive shaft. They went on and on about how peices were crumbling ect. We were moving cross country and did have the time to get the repair done in California, so we shipped it as it was, no repairs done. At our destination we drove it off of the transport truck and it felt like it was fine. We took it to a mechanic to make sure. He said he couldn't find anything wrong with it. That it had probably been a stuck valve. He reccomendded that we get it flushed and that was that. No new tansmission required. That was almost a year ago and the truck is still just fine. What a crook.

I have had an engine lock up on me and you would have known it was happenning. It may have just been a coinciendent, but on such an expessive repair it is always a wise idea to get a second opinion.

  • My car will start and work for ahout one hour until the battery is dead.I changed the battery and alternator.?

I have a Toyota corolla station wagon 1990 and when I start the car it will work for about an hour until the battery is dead. I will recharge the battey the same thing will happen so I put in new the battery and a recondition alternator and the samething thing happens as before.

Is it the alternator not charging the battery? How about running a direct connection from the alternator to the battery? Is that possobile? Is there any device /modulator that it has to pass through before it reaches the battery?

Will a direct connection damage my battery and alternator? The recondition alternator has a 3 prong plug and two of the wires are slightly thicker than the one that was on the old alternator. The connecction I did was the same as the old oneMy car will start and work for ahout one hour until the battery is dead.I changed the battery and alternator.?check your alternator and battery for loose cables. make sure the terminals on the battery properly secured and not able to slip.

for the alternator, check the cables and make sure each bolt is tightened to it's maximum. My car will start and work for ahout one hour until the battery is dead.I changed the battery and alternator.?Check to see if the batt has a dead cell (even though its new) and check if the alt is putting out. If u dont know how to do this or have a tester on hand go to ur local autoparts store and have them test it for you. If its no that u may have a short sumwhere draining ur batt. Also check ur grounds and make sure they are clean that causes probs also.My car will start and work for ahout one hour until the battery is dead.I changed the battery and alternator.?Well, I haven't really had much experience with Jap. Cars, but most modern vehicles will have a regulating swich soewhere between the alternator and the redirect cable. Also, Check the cables themselves. A faulty cable could mean that the full current is not getting back to the battery. Anyways, like i said, I am more familiar with American makes, But there should be some similarity. My car will start and work for ahout one hour until the battery is dead.I changed the battery and alternator.?check the cables for any bare spots. might be grounding out.My car will start and work for ahout one hour until the battery is dead.I changed the battery and alternator.?sounds like a wiring problem, however, have that alternator checked. new just means new it doesnt necessarily mean good. if it is , in fact, good have a competent mechanic check it out.My car will start and work for ahout one hour until the battery is dead.I changed the battery and alternator.?i own a repair shop and the alternator is what regulates the voltage also on this one,it sounds like to me you have completely lost the ground wire from the body to the battery, and all its doing is running on battery voltage ,and not allowing the alternator to charge it back up,one thing you said that helped was it does this with both battery's and alternators ,so if i was you id be looking for a bad or loose ground wire from the body to the engine ,they have a lot of ground wires on them, and all of them are needed,i hope you find it,they can be hard to find when their doing this, good luck with it.My car will start and work for ahout one hour until the battery is dead.I changed the battery and alternator.?Alternator Voltage Regulator is probably bad. You can buy them at auto-part store. This part basically controls the output of the alternator. For example, when the battery is charged the regulator will restricted the amount of amperage from the alternator allowing just enough to keep the car running. Most new vehicle have the regulator built in to the alternator. In your case they are two separate parts.

You can test to see if the alternator is working by disconnecting on of the battery terminals while the car is running, if the alternator and the regulator is good the car should stay running. If it dies the one of them is bad. Sometimes there are problems with recondition parts, so the alternator could still be bad. I don't think it is you battery, if it was the car would not ever die as long as it is running. My car will start and work for ahout one hour until the battery is dead.I changed the battery and alternator.?The first thing I would try is putting a volt meter on the battery while the car is running. The battery should run just above 12 volts not running and around 13 to 15 running. While the car is running, if it doesnt read 13 to 15 its your alternator. I have purchased new remaned ones that were still bad. I would also check battery connections, broken wires , and ground cable to frame connection. My car will start and work for ahout one hour until the battery is dead.I changed the battery and alternator.?new does not mean good. replace the alternatorMy car will start and work for ahout one hour until the battery is dead.I changed the battery and alternator.?allso check the fuse that goto the battery or retest alt it might be falty diodes or brushes

How do i change the battery cables on my ford taurus?

I'm having some problems starting my car and I think the battery cables are corroded, but I don't know how to change them, does anybody knows and maybe have a diagram or something?? thanks!!!!How do i change the battery cables on my ford taurus?Go to your local auto parts store and ask for the positive and negative cables for your car (but you probably only need a negative, that one all ways seems to take the worst beating). When you get them you will see what is involved in changing them. Like how many connectors there are on them etc. It is not an overly difficult job and if you can change your own oil, air cleaner, etc. I don't think you will have any problems. How do i change the battery cables on my ford taurus?you have to cut the old ones off

use BIG DIKES or bolt cutter

replace w/ new onesHow do i change the battery cables on my ford taurus?Probably no need to change, but you may need to clean the connections at the battery terminals. For this you will need the correct wrench size plus a specialty wire brush designed to remove the corrosion at the terminals. Just be careful not to short across the terminals or you will get a shock. When clean test to see if you have any improvement. If not you may need to have you battery tested. Many auto supply stores will do this for free. If this is not th problem you may need a tune up or have a mechanic check to see if there are other issues,How do i change the battery cables on my ford taurus?the cables probably just need to be removed and cleaned.your local auto parts store has a spray cleaner that will remove the corrosion.

Be Careful, you wil be dealing with acid based corrosion.wear gloves.

How do I change the terminal cables on my car battery? Why does the positive side have a fuse?

My wife drives a 2002 Mitsubishi Lancer ES. Yesterday she drove the car to the store and it worked fine, but when she came out to drive home, the car wasn't getting any power. No dummy lights, no chimes, nothing. I took the battery to walmart and they they said it was fine. I bought a terminal brush and i scrubbed both battery posts and cables clean.

That fixed the problem. Until this morning. She drove the car to work just fine, but after getting out and shutting the door, she tried to lock it with the remote and the whole car was dead again.

Should I consider changing the cable or just the ends? Is it hard? How do I change the terminal cables on my car battery? Why does the positive side have a fuse?did you scrub the inside of the clamp that hooks to the battery ??

the positive post has a fuse to protect your wireing aginst a short circut it will blow before the wires melt causing a fire that will burn up the whole car

replaceing the whole cable is better thain the clamp but if the clamp isnt broken cleaning it will work fine

as you clean the posts wash them with water they need to be shiney clean

you can buy a test light to see wich terminal is the one giving you the problemHow do I change the terminal cables on my car battery? Why does the positive side have a fuse?just follow the cables to where they bolt in take them loose and clean the ends with a wire brush and reinstall, you probably dont need new cables, the positive side has a fuse for overload protection in case your alt has a power surgeHow do I change the terminal cables on my car battery? Why does the positive side have a fuse?you can buy battery ends. all you do is cut the cables as close to the ends as you can get them, peel away some of the rubber coating, insert the cables on the new ends and tighten the bolts on the ends. also, i would check the end on the starter to make sure its clean and tight. How do I change the terminal cables on my car battery? Why does the positive side have a fuse? They sell what are called Marine Battery Terminals at most autopart stores. They're the bolt on new cable clamps. They're not the best, but they're the easiest for most do-it-yourselfers. If you have a butane torch, you could get solder on ends, they are the best. It could just be a loose ground. Check your wiring first. Good luck with it.How do I change the terminal cables on my car battery? Why does the positive side have a fuse?you are getting what is called a parasitic draw from your battery it is usually cased by a bad ground or something is staying on that is not suposed to when the ignition is off

the ground is the black wire on your battery it has the neg. (-) symbol on itHow do I change the terminal cables on my car battery? Why does the positive side have a fuse?take a look at the cable terminals on the battery side. Take a good look at the connection point where the copper cable goes into the terminal. Does it look a little green? Now take a look at the smaller red wires from the battery,,,does it kinda look the same? that greeen stuff will stop anything from getting thru.

Take a spray can of wd40 and spray the wire at that point .Soak it good. Now try to start it. This is just a temporary fix--it gives you a better connection.

How do I stop my new car radio draining the battery on my FIAT Punto Sporting MK2?

I bought a Silvercrest Car Radio with CD and MP3 player (KH2380) from LIDL a few weeks ago?

    http://www.mysilvercrest.de/en/artikel.php?a=98

However I believe the unit is totally draining my car battery ?the battery had been dead now on three occasions after not driving the car for about 2 to 3 days.

The car is a FIAT Punto sporting MK2 ?6 years old (1999 / 2000 Model).

The first time this happened I changed the original battery for a brand new one (Bosch Silver) which I檇 first charged overnight.

The silvercrest only has 4 pins on it ?I have read somewhere that the wiring for the FIAT Punto was non standard and that you need to swap the yellow and red wires around.

Or just remove the yellow wire totally that supplies power to the unit even when the car is off? I do not mind losing radio presets as I only ever listen to CD / MP3 anyway. My main concern is to always have a car that starts. How do I stop my new car radio draining the battery on my FIAT Punto Sporting MK2?Any head unit shouldn't drain the battery as yours does, I think it may be wired incorrectly.

I'd run 2 direct lines from the battery 1 via an inline fuse straight to the head unit power in and one to the earth, link the constant live to the ignition input if you ever do want to save your presets.

Either that or the alternator belt is loose or a bad connection somewhere else. How do I stop my new car radio draining the battery on my FIAT Punto Sporting MK2?I have a seicento and the think i found is that you have to turn the stereo off seperately to the ignition - my brother left the stereo on for about 10 hours straight and that killed the battery. Thanks, DanCar Speaker System Query, !!!Please Help!!!?lots of work ahead of you. the speaker set up wil be fine. you'll need another amp for your sub. a woofer does need a certain box size. if room is an issue i would recommend getting a shallow mount and putting it under the seat or something not in the door. I unscrewed the bolts to the electrical leads on the top of the positive and negative switches on the battery and took them off. I can't seem to find what is holding the battery down. I looked around and I don't see any bolts securing the battery, but I know there has to be something. How do I get the battery out? Does anyone know?

Am thinking battery has short, but I will feel really silly if I change out and car doesn't start again....somebody who knows about this stuff please tell me wassup! thanks...How do you know if it's your battery or your car that's messed up?The electronics class I just took leads me to also believe you have a bad/corroded/ or loose connection somewhere along your starting circuit. A shorted battery would certainly not cause this problem. Easiest thing to do here is clean the battery terminals and both cables,(where they make contact) then try starting it. If you still have the same old problem, chances are the starter has a bad connection. If you have access to a multimeter, this issue can solved in minutes. Good news is, if a bad connection is the problem, its usually free to fix, some cleaning/tightening usually does the trick. FYI: the second most likely cause an open circuit in your starter's armature. This is characterized by an occasional no cranking condition, which suddenly goes away after turning the key enough times. This condition requires buying a new starter unless you feel like rebuilding it. The answer is simple, but the issue here is that there are a myriad of manufacturers that market alarms and remotes, and even within one manufacturer, there are many models.

You are going to need to either refer to the manual that came with the alarm package, or if you had it installed, and they neglected to provide the manual, you will need to contact the installer.

  • Why won't my car start since I changed battery for remote?

I don't know what's going on with the remote for my Rover 420. My remote for the central locking would only work if I held it close to the door, and then it was getting worse where I had to click it loads of times before it would lock and the beeping would stop, to turn off the immobiliser. I can't drive it unless it's locked and then unlocked with the remote, as if I don't it beeps and it doesn't start.

I went to a car parts shop to get a battery, and they said that they wouldn't fit it for me as with Rover, you have to look in the book you get with the car to do it a certain way.

As I was worried I would do it wrong, I went into the garage around the corner and asked them if they knew how to fit the battery so it would work, and a young lad put in the battery and then said he didn't know what to do once the battery was in, but luckily I still had the key turned so I didn't have to start the immobiliser again.

I got home and and removed the key from the ignition, and then read the book about how to fit the battery, so I took it out and put it back in again. I got out the car and locked it with the key in the door, and left it a few mins. The book said to unlock it with the key in the door, then press the lock button a few times to synchronise it, so I did that and nothing happens.

What am I supposed to do now? Shall I take it to a garage that specialise in Rover?

Who do I need to phone to get the number so I can over ride the immobiliser so I can drive it until I have the remote sorted?

I put the battery in correct with the facing out. Why won't my car start since I changed battery for remote? Assuming that the 420 is that same as the 214 that I had, to override the immobiliser you should have a 4 digit code which you use with the key in the drivers door lock, a bit like opening a safe e.g. If the code is 1213 you do 1 turn left, 2 right, 1 left then 3 right.

It is fairly evident that your local garage hasn't got a clue, you should have gone to a Rover agent straight off.Why won't my car start since I changed battery for remote? check the imobiliserWhy won't my car start since I changed battery for remote? How to change the battery of an Audi A4 without resetting the computer?

How could you avoid the computer to be resetted and therefore loose the ability of starting the car after wards since the key has the memory chip in it that would not be acknowledged by the starting system. First is the radio, you have to enter the 4 digits radio code to make it work again (note: most newer A4 model will not need this step). (usually a few seconds during changeover). I had the same problem with my blaupunkt this afternoon as I had to change my battery. The stereo will store all other information, but will need a code to activate.

As far as the Hyundai stereo goes it might not need a code, if it does and it is factory fitted, then you will have to call Hyundai and give them the VIN or whatever they need to locate the right code. Alternatively, there might be a way of jury rigging it with just some temporary wiring, attach just some thin wires to the terminals of the new battery and tie them to the terminal cables of the car so that when the old battery is removed, voltage is at least not interrupted until you can lock the terminal clamps down again and take the temp wires off. This will maintain a constant current and fool the stereo into thinking that it is the same battery and that it wasn't taken out or stolen or anything.

The reason that radios code like that is to prevent theft, they rely on constant current to maintain their memory and to keep the code active. If the current (power) is cut, the radio code is inactive and the radio thinks that it was removed from the car (possibly stolen). That is why.

What is the life expectancy of a car battery??

we got this car 2004 and its just been peace of crap from two years ago my husband thinks it's the battery I say other wise so how long does a car battery last normally are you suppose to change batteries every four years???What is the life expectancy of a car battery??There is no predetermined amount of battery life. So many variables come into play that it really depends on the situation at hand.

Your battery is probably bad though unless it is not being properly charged by the alternator or you have bad battery cables.

A starter can kill a battery quickly if it is drawing to many amps.

Typically a battery will last up to 5 years if maintained properly and yes I have seen them last for as long as 12 years but this is a rare item to last that long especially on todays cars and the poor maintenance habits of todays drivers.

Best bet is to remove the battery and have it fully charged then load tested this will tell you what the battery is doing and if it is bad or good. Thanks Bill BWhat is the life expectancy of a car battery??Depending on where you live batteries will usually last 2-8 years. It will be on the low side if you live somewhere that get really hot or cold and on the high side if you live in an average weather area. Why do you say that the car is a piece of crap. The only thing the battery would do is give you problems starting the car. If you give some more info you may get some better advice.

    Starting a car takes more electricity than all of your accessories put together so it may be the battery. Even if you headlights and everything else works the battery may still be bad. Try turning on your headlights and then starting your car. If the lights go almost all the way out while you are holding the key in the start position then it is probably your battery. I'm not sure what kind of options there are in Germany, but stores such as sears or autozone will usually check your battery for free so you may want to call around. I agree with you, next time get a Honda, still my favorite car company even though I don't drive one any more.What is the life expectancy of a car battery??lots of places that sell batteries have a %26quot;load test%26quot;

machine, it puts a load on the battery and they

can tell if a battery is bad or not..

also check battery connections and make shure

they are clean and tight.. the battery may not

be getting a good charge. What is the life expectancy of a car battery??The original battery usually lasts about 10-12 years. Replacement batteries usually last 3-6 years. What is the life expectancy of a car battery??your problem sounds like you need a new battery, I would go get a free charging system check to be sure from somebody where you live, usually batteries last as long as they are warranted for, if it's a 2 yr. battery you can almost bet that it will die on that day or shortly after the 2 yrs. What is the life expectancy of a car battery??3-5 years. Maybe more, maybe less... depends on what type of life they had. Excessive cold temperatures, if they were drained down or allowed to sit without a charge would shorten the life. What is the life expectancy of a car battery??I do purchasing for the city of Chicago's fleet maintenance department. I purchase Interstate batteries (they make the die hards for Sears) and we buy the top of the line, they take quite a beating and they usually have a life expectancy of around three to four years, and that is the best!

  • 2004 Honda Civic Limited Edition (Basic car) Err 1 on radio after battery changed?

    Hi,

2004 Honda Civic Special Edition (which seems to mean really basic with a/c, no power windows etc, it is a manual not automatic transmission).

Battery was changed on my car, and the radio won't play now. Not even the time display. The radio is basic AM/FM/CD (single). It has a little red light that blinks for theft protection (least there is words to that effect next to it). I have absolutely no mechanical knowledge, and electricity scares the beejeezus out of me, I can usually take things apart, but putting them together not so great - and anything with wires I stay clear of. I've read that to fix this the radio would have to be 'pulled' but would rather not. I bought the car used and don't have the manuals or anything.

I'd rather not take it into the dealership and pay for who knows what (dealership near me I don't trust very much - I've driven out of there with noises and when I called about it was told it 'rusted up' in the shop). I don't know of any rust that takes place in one hour flat (am I wrong there, or right to be suspicious of those folk)?

Thanks in advance, a terribly unknowledgeable person here.

OOOH ya - if anyone knows the code, how can I get the radio to accept it... I've punched a bunch of random numbers but can't get to the code prompt.

    I appreciate your help!

2004 Honda Civic Limited Edition (Basic car) Err 1 on radio after battery changed?Call Honda USA and they will help you. If you are not registered with them as the current owner they may want proof that you own the vehicle. They will need the VIN for the car and if the radio has been changed then they will need the serial number for the radio which means taking it out of the dash. If you know which dealer originally sold the car, it is possible that they have it on file as well.

http://www.odyclub.com/forums/showthread2004 Honda Civic Limited Edition (Basic car) Err 1 on radio after battery changed?I would first look in your owners manual. Typically (on the first page) there is a place where you can write down the radio-security pass code. If there is something written: then we've already gone through half the battle.

    If you find a number, I would suggest disconnecting the battery for about 10 mins and then reconnecting it. This should give you enough time for the radio to %26quot;reset%26quot; When you turn the car on, the radio should promp %26quot;Input security code%26quot;

Using the numbers found in the manual you can use the radio buttons (that are numbered) to input the code. If this doesnt work or you dont have the number you can try something simple like 1, 2, 3, 4. Otherwise you may have to go to the dealer for assistance.

There are a few other places you could find the pass-code:

Look through the glove compartment for any paperwork with serial numbers or written numbers. The most common places is a little white label with the serial number of the radio that starts with an %26quot;M%26quot; and a bunch of numbers after it and another 5 digit number. This 5 digit number is the super secret code. The places this is most commonly found is on the left side of the glove compartment, in the trunk somewhere along the gasket or underneath where the speakers are, under the fuse-box panel in the engine compartment, under the ashtray and sometimes under the center consoles lid.

    Best of luck.

One last thing, if it doesnt say %26quot;Code%26quot; on the screen when you turn your radio on... try hitting mode or scan this should cycle through some of the options available for the radio.

Also, when looking through the glove box, look up! Sometimes there is a sticker on top of the glovebox (basically on the inside of the dash, pointed downward).2004 Honda Civic Limited Edition (Basic car) Err 1 on radio after battery changed?i had a 2001 eclipse with the same issue, have you tried calling the seller? thats what i had to do and he gave me the code.

The code MUST be obtained from either a local dealership (some are funny and require you to bring the car or radio to them and show proof of ownership), or if you bought the car from a Honda dealership, simply call the service department with the radio Serial Number, printed on a barcode label on the radio. If the first dealership you call gives you trouble call another one around you.

Changing the battery on a car remote key?

we have an '05 Pontiac Grand Prix that has remote control for a key that locks/unlocks the doors and trunks as well sets a car alarm off. however the battery is dying and we cannot figure out how to remove the back to get to the battery. we have no actual key to unlock the doors, it only came with a key for engine so we cannot lock or unlock our car without the remote.Changing the battery on a car remote key?The fob either snaps together or has a small machine Phillips head screw holding it together in the middle.

    Mine just snaps together, fwiw.

Take a flat head screwdriver or butter knife and pry it apart on the side. Snap it back together after replacing the battery.

  • How do you change battery terminals on a Ford Mustang?

My friend's car is a 2000-ish Mustang she has to mess with the battery every time to get her car to start.

Her dad told her the battery terminals need to be changed, but he lives 2 hours away and she has work in the morning.

Is it something I could get my brother to do? Is it difficult?

Can someone give me a step-by-step walk-through on how to do this?

Thank you.How do you change battery terminals on a Ford Mustang? It should be fairly simple depending on how mechanically inclined your brother is. Here is the info:

DIY: How to Change Your Battery

    From About.com

    What you will need:

    1. An adjustable wrench or a socket wrench

    2. New battery

    3. Wire brush or battery terminal cleaner

    4. Clean water

    5. Safety glasses

    6. Rubber gloves (Optional)

    7. Can of Rust-O-Lieum primer

    8. White Lithium Grease

WORK IN A WELL-VENTILATED AREA AWAY FROM SPARKS OR OPEN FLAMES. DO NOT SMOKE. AND ITS ALWAYS A GOOD IDEA TO WEAR PROTECTIVE EYEWEAR.

    *

Disconnect the negative cable first and then disconnect the positive cable.

    *

Remove the battery hold down. It may be along the top of the battery or on the battery tray clamped to the side of the battery.

    *

Once it is free, carefully lift it up and out of the tray.

BATTERY'S CONTAIN SULFURIC ACID AND IT CAN BURN YOUR SKIN. IT IS VERY CORROSIVE TO ANYTHING IT COMES IN CONTACT WITH.

    * Look at the battery tray. If there are signs of rust and corrosion, clean it off with plenty of clear water. Allow the tray to dry and spray it with the primer to prevent further deterioration.

    * Place the new battery in the tray and reinstall the hold down clamp.

    * If you have a top terminal battery, clean the inside of the cables with a battery brush and wire brush the battery posts. If you have a side terminal battery, clean the terminals with the wire brush.

    * Check and make sure there is no corrosion on the battery cables. Clean them as required.

    * Reattach the positive battery cable first and then the negative battery cable. Tighten the tight but on side terminal batteries do not over tighten. You can pull the side post out of the battery if you over tighten them.

    * Give the terminals a good coating of White Lithium Grease to keep them from getting corroded.

    * Start the engine and you're done.

This is a quick and easy job that should take 30 to 45 minutes. How do you change battery terminals on a Ford Mustang? It actually very simple, The terminal only cost around 10 bucks for a pair. You simply disconnect the battery and changed the terminals by removing the nutt that connects the cable to the terminals and adding the new ones. If you cant do it then any mechanic or person with minimal mechanical knowledge can do this. Good luckHow do you change battery terminals on a Ford Mustang?it's a little hard to say without seeing them, but often times the problem is corrosion which you can do something about. carefully remove the negetive cable from the battery, get a can of coke or make a mixture of baking soda and water, (not a paste, just very milky looking). dip the end of the cable in the mixture or the coke and leave it set for 20 minutes-half an hour, dry the end, hook it back up and do the same with the other cable. be careful not to get the mixture on the top of the battery, what you are doing is cleaning the chemical build up by neutralizing the acids, if you get it in the battery it will also neutralize it and you will be buying a new battery. this will only help if the problem is corrosion, you may have bad cables or a bad connection on the other end, and replacing the cable is probably more than you want to do.

How to get rid of car battery symbol in dash?

So I installed a brand new battery for my corolla '95. I did everything right and even cleaned the terminals so I am pretty sure that I did everything right when I installed it. My car started fine and everything but the thing is the symbol to change a new battery still shows up on my dash, so I don't understand whats wrong?

Could it be the wiring? Or does the dash need to be somehow reseted so it knows that I did put a new battery? How to get rid of car battery symbol in dash? The battery symbol is indicating that the alternator is not operating. This may be due to a voltage regulator or alternator failure. The system needs to be tested in the car to correctly diagnose the failure. How to get rid of car battery symbol in dash?Wow - I can certainly see how'd you'd make that mistake.

The battery symbol has nothing to do with the condition of the battery. They've used that lamp on some cars for 50 years, but it has always meant the same thing. That symbol is intended to tell you that the charging system (the alternator) has stopped working. A new battery could never never never never never never solve that problem. Amazing, isn't it?

I suppose if the oil light comes on, you'd change the oil, right? If the brake light comes on, you'd get new brakes. It makes sense, but it won't work. That's just not what that means, pure and simple.

P.S. - the idea you could %26quot;reset%26quot; that lamp is very funny. It's completely a dumb circuit that has no intelligence. It would be like resetting your porch light. How to get rid of car battery symbol in dash? That symbol does not mean %26quot; Change battery%26quot;. It means there is a discharge condition...as in alternator is not recharging the battery. Have your charging system checked. How to get rid of car battery symbol in dash?It may or may not be the battery.

We have a '95 vehicle as well, when you replace batteries and such a lot of the time you have to take it in to the shop to get it reset.

How to change ML 320 battery?

how do you change a Mercedes ML320 car battery?

Can i do it my self or should i go to the experts? How to change ML 320 battery? It's pretty easy. The only thing you really need is a socket extension to be able to reach down to the bottom of the battery tray and loosen the clamps. If you're not using a Benz battery, just make sure your replacement battery has the little lip on the bottom for the clamps in order to secure the battery in place. Having a loose battery sliding around in the battery tray is not very safe.

As the others have mentioned, have your battery code ready as the radio will go into theft-mode when the power has been disconnected. How to change ML 320 battery?Of course you can do it yourself. Disconnect the old battery and install a new one. Make sure you have the right battery AND you have a code to your radio (after battery power is disconnected and then connected again you need to enter code into the radio.)How to change ML 320 battery?remove the positive then the negative terminals. then remove the battery hold down clamp. then install new battery, clamp then the negative cable and finally the positive cable.

you must also have the radio code.

How do you know when to change your Car?

I drive a 1989 Corolla and I was wondering what are the signs or symptoms to know that it is time to change to a diffrent vhiecle. I am not the kind of person who likes to get rid of something that works. I have had this car for a while now and there is nothing wrong with it. Just recently brought a new battery and everything works fine. But I have seen friends that change there car in 5-6 years. They say %26quot;something was worng with it%26quot; and never tell me what it is or I do not understand it.The car is 17 years old. It has only been in one major accident and the rest were minor. (People damaging the back bumper.)

Vhiecle Status: The paint on the car is fine no dents: There is rust that occurs near the wheel.

The A/C, Radio all still work. All the lights in the car still works. I have felt no diffrence in power over the years I have tried it.

The engine is fine a bit dusty and some rusted parts but nothing serious. No holes. The rims are rusted metal coating has fallen off.How do you know when to change your Car?Since it sounds like the car is in expected shape for being 17 years old and you are happy with it and do not feel a need for a new car then drive it till it breaks beyond the cost of repairing it. What I mean that as long as the repairs are normal expenses and you can afford it then keep it going. If the engine dies or the tranny throws a gear and you are looking at major expenses then it would be time to sell car for parts and spend your money towards a new or newer car. You can always have a mechanic check the commpression of the engine and other major parts of the car for any tell tale signs of major issues to come.

If you car in not burning oil, has good compression, the tranny shifts well, the steering is stright and tight and the brakes are solid then you are good to go. The rest of the car may nickel and dime you but it may be less then a new car.How do you know when to change your Car?when you have the money to do so

when repair and maint costs exceed the value of the car / your expendable budgetHow do you know when to change your Car?Your car probably has little value if sold or traded in due to the fact it is 17 years old. Since you report no big problems I would be willing to stick with the car until problems develop. Those who trade every few years do it for a variety of reasons usually unrelated to performance and reliability. How do you know when to change your Car?when your car starts to burn oil, or if the car is running hotter than normal - not necessarily overheating, but the temperature gauge points higher than you remember. How do you know when to change your Car?Not to be mean, but by chance are you a compulsive collector, or the type who can't throw out anything that isn't broken? In my family, my mom would get a different car every 2-3 years. She would get a new car because she wanted to change looks. Just like furniture or clothes or hairstyles. We were considered low income for years and then made it into middle class, so the cars got a little nicer, but that's it. We didn't drive a car for 20 years until a catastrophic failure and then start all over again. That just seems ridiculous to me. Now that I'm a young adult and am just getting on my feet, I don't have much money for a vehicle so I've basically gone from beater to beater in the last 5 years. Some cars were nicer than others. I always keep up on maintenance, but usually I am given a vehicle on it's last leg and it ends up dying on me. I have been the last owner of 8 out of the 10 cars I've had in the last 5 years. Personally, I just don't see the point in keeping a vehicle for that long unless you don't have money to buy another one or unless it's a sports car or rare car.How do you know when to change your Car?when repairs cost more than the value of the car is the major one. most people trade in more for the fact of not wanting something old. or they get tired of it after a few years.

beings everything is fine (as far as you know) and your happy with it. keep it till the tires fall off. Toyota's are known to last for a long time. How do you know when to change your Car?I have lived around mechanics all my life.. Even my ex husband was a tech.. Toyotas are good vehicles.. I owned a 86 tercel and it lasted me a long time.. of course regular maintence, but other than that if it still gets u from point a to point b then why get rid of it?

How much does it Cost to change a battery and a the belt in the engine of a car?

Labor and PartsHow much does it Cost to change a battery and a the belt in the engine of a car?It depends on the car of course but belts will cost about $10 for a %26quot;V%26quot; - belt and around $25 for a serpentine belt.

    Batteries cost about $30-$80 depending on the brand and %26quot;CCA%26quot;

Labor also depends on the car and how accessible everything is, but labor at most auto shops is $60/hour and should take between 1/2 hour and 1 hour. How much does it Cost to change a battery and a the belt in the engine of a car?batteries can be anywhere from 30-80 bucks and a belt is usually liek 20-30 bucks. labor shouldnt be more that 50 or 60 bucks. How much does it Cost to change a battery and a the belt in the engine of a car?Depends on the battery.

    Maybe...$100-$150? Cheaper or more expensive.

If you have ANY mechanical ability, it's almost dummy proof on many newer cars to do it yourself. The Serpentine Belt on many cars is about a 1 minute job.

There is a tensioner that you move with whatever tool it takes.

You slide the old belt off and let the tensioner back to its normal spot (it's spring loaded)

You put the new belt on in the same routing that the old one was in, minus one pulley.

You pull/push (whichever way it goes) on the tensioner to let the belt go back over that pulley.

    You're done.

The battery MAY require you to hook up some other power source if you have a special radio or some alarm systems. That's not true with most vehicles. You can usually unbolt the battery cables and take off whatever is holding the battery down and reverse the procedure for putting a new one in.

This is true with most cars. But if you want to pay someone else to do it, they may charge up to a half hour labor for both jobs depending on what the book calls for. Including time to look up the right belt and battery, it may take the technician a whopping 10 minutes to change both. Then you're looking at markup prices on the battery and belt.

Worth seeing whether or not you can do it yourself on the car.How much does it Cost to change a battery and a the belt in the engine of a car?well, I dont agree 100% with the others. Serpenteen belts can go $40-50, and batteries...$40-$100 Labor may vary depending on the layout of the car. some belts take 10 min and others up to an hour....Batteries usually dont take long but you never know what you run into. I say my range for a mechanic anywhere from $80-$170 for parts(remember they mark them up from what YOU can buy them for) and $100-$170 for labor.

Car not starting. Is it time for a new battery?

My car battery has been ok.It came with my new camry 2004 model.I think I must have left the little lights on (below the headlights ) %26amp; after 3 hrs the car wouldn't start.I then did a jump start with my friends's car %26amp; drove for about 5 miles. After I turned of the engine it refused to start.I also can't shift gears to neutral in order to move the car.Is it time to change the car's battery?

Planing to call AAA to jump start first thing in the morning. But I'm running out of gas too.I would need to take the car to toyota to work on it but need to fill up gas on the way.Is it okay to fill up gas without turning off the engine?

AAA replaces battery's too but I'm not sure if there should be any other problem. How much can I pay for a new battery?

Lotsa questions but I would sure appreciate some answers. The main one being,do I need to go for a new battery?Car not starting. Is it time for a new battery?Well I'd desiring to have the battery tested and trying to charge it fully before deciding on any new battery purchase.Second is really it isn't good for you to pump gas while engine is running but I've known a few ppl that have done so including myself. Most important thing is to keep a solid ground position when pumping the fuel regardless if the car is off you idling a hand should be touching metal on the vehicle and the other pumping the fuel into the tank.Whats more dangerous really is having you car give off a static charge or your cell phone ringing even cam cause issues thats another reason to ground your body before pumping the fuel.

One thing you could do is see once the vehicle is boosted and driven a bit if the lights or dash or it's electrical system seem to be acting up that might suggest that the voltage regulator or alternator isn't working properly but if you can start it up and all the lights etc seem normal pretty once its running then more then likely the alternator or voltage regulator is fine it's just a weak battery or weak connection in the charging system etc.

I'd be checking the alternator belt on it and any belts to see if any are loose , plus check the battery terminals to see if their tight and clean too.

I prefer to carry a portable booster that way you can simply give you car a boost if needed yourself sometimes they run as low as 20 to 30 bucks and are well worth the invest if a good quality product.Another thing you could do is request gas be brought to you by AAA when they come to boost the vehicle. Some consider both a service the bringing of gas then the boost but I don't know exactly how AAA runs it service contracts.

If under warranty or is affecting the warranty that you must use Toyota I'd use their services otherwise just drive to any reliable mechanic or shop that sells automotive batteries and ask for a free charging system check and estimate.

Due to the age of that vehicle it could be rust or corrision in the charging systems connections or simply a weak or dead cell battery.I say the battery is probably the first thing I'd look at or a belt or charging system is the cause here and more then likely bec you can drive it once boosted the alternator must be giving out power but is it enough or is the battery not able to hold a charge for long at all bec of dead cells.

Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way you can ask AAA to check for loose connections etc on the battery or a loose belt but really these are all things they should just naturally look at before boosting anyways.

What I recommend is Interstate battery's and I bet that vehicle of yours would run well with at least a 750 to 850 or more cold amp rated battery. If you can bet a double post battery do it their great if you need a boost or to give boosts or if you ever wish to install it in your next vehicle etc.Heres a link to the company by the way Interstate is what some of the top racing cars in the world use.Just look up your area to find a local sales agent and most outlets will also test your charging system for you too.

http://www.interstatebatteries.com/cs_esCar not starting. Is it time for a new battery?yea you need a new battery just go to auto zone they can help you. most battery's only last 4to 5 years so you are due.Car not starting. Is it time for a new battery? You may have killed a cell in the battery. Check the voltage with a meter. It should be over 12 volts. These stupid small cars with their small batteries, if you don't drive them for a week or so it can kill the battery. I bought the sears platinum and it hasn't killed it.

Also clean the posts and terminals. get some grease for the posts. New battery won't hurt.Car not starting. Is it time for a new battery? It could be a couple of things. If your car will start with a jump it not the starter, but it could be the battery or the alternator. The best bet is to take it to a shop and get a load test done. It this is not an option start the car turn on the lights, radio, fan, ect and if the car dies you need an alternator and probably a battery. It the car continues to run and the lights don't dim you just need a new battery.Car not starting. Is it time for a new battery?AAA over charges for batteries. You can get one cheaper at Autozone

How to replace spark plugs and wires myself?

hi. i decided to replace spark plugs and wires my own, because i think it is a good opportunity for me to learn more about cars. i have no idea about cars yet, i cant even change car battery my own, but this time, i want to take times and try it. first what tools i need for replaceing those spark plugs and wires? and is it too hard for beginner to do it??How to replace spark plugs and wires myself?knowing the car would help, but your going to need a spark plug socket which there are different sizes but they are cheap, you will need a ratchet, an Extension for the ratchet wouldn't hurt to have a few different lengths laying there, and its alot easier with a u joint for your socket, then you will need plugs and wires, its not hard to do, i will tell you to take one spark plug wire off put then the spark plug gap the plug to what ever it says, under the hood on the label it will say gap xx-xx amount, spark plug gappers are 3 or 4 bucks and last a life time, you can gap them all at once to start out too, then you put the new plug in, find the closest length wire and put it in, and repeat on the next one, chances are the wires will not be the same length exactly due to patents and other things, so just the closest one, and the reason i say take them off one at a time is because you will not need to know the firing order that way, and you will not mess up the wires and firing order and get your self in a bind, also, you may break a spark plug so you may end up buying an extruder they are 10-15 bucks for a cheap one, and if you want to do it a good way and make it easier for next time buy a small container of anti- seze and put it on the threads of the spark plug before screwing it in, your wires should come with a small thing of die elecric grease and use it spairingly or buy a small tube of it for 5 bucks, and you can find torque specs. on how tight to make the spark plugs but then you need a torque wrench so just make them snug- tight but not tight tightHow to replace spark plugs and wires myself? You don't usually need any tools, unless the wires are under a cover that bolts down or something. How to replace spark plugs and wires myself?Depends on what kind of car you have and the type of engine and what kind of spark plug wires it has. Some cars, the wires just pop off. Mine, a Chevy, the wires have to be unbolted. That's only after you take the damn air cleaner off first! Good luck. How to replace spark plugs and wires myself? You'll definitely need a spark plug socket, the correct size for you plugs. Probably 5/8 deep well, either a handle or rachet to turn the socket. And a good eye for detail.

You need to twist the spark plug wire at the boot on the plug and pull.

Good luck, for the first time I recommend having someone who knows how there, just for pointers. How to replace spark plugs and wires myself?easiest tools are a ratchet, plug socket of the correct size an extension to fit the ratchet, a universal joint for the socket, and a spark plug gapping guage. Do only one plug %26amp; wire at a time.. Match the old wire for length as close as u can to one of the new set. make sure the new wire is properly seated on the new plug and the coil pack/distributor. Do one at a time till theye are all done. I f'got to mention check the gap on the plug with the guage before installing the plugsHow to replace spark plugs and wires myself?tools:

    spark plug socket

masking tape or post its with tape

    remove coil packs and/or wires

label wire with tape- for that cylinder. set up 1-4 from left to right, like u read.

    remove plugs

make sure new ones are gapped. install until hand tight then turn 90 degrees.

now replace wires by length size as u have them labeled.

also check out youtube for video walk thrus. a few are availableHow to replace spark plugs and wires myself?First, locate your plugs, and see how easy they are to get to. Some cars are real easy, but others can be very hard, requiring removing parts and or removing fender covers, tilting the engine or whatever.

If you can get to one plug, try putting a spark plug socket wrench on it ( a tool you will need). There are different sizes, so it could be 5/8, 3/4 or metric of those sizes. (I don't know metric. probably a 17 or 18 or maybe 19).

Once yu find out what socket will fit, use that on all spark plugs. These sockets are deep, like three to four inches long. Then you will need a socket drive rachet. A 3/8 inch drive rachet wrench works good. It goes on the socket you will use, so make sure your socket is also made for 3/8 drive. It has a square hole on top that is 3/8 inch.

You might need some extensions also, maybe different lengths, like 2 inch, 4 inch, 6 inch and10 inch. these can be put together to form a longer one, if needed, lik the 10 inch plus the 4 inch will make a 14 inch extension. Some of the places to get to spark plugs, can be hard to get to and you need long extensions.

Before you start, take some masking tape, and put one piece on each plug wire, and put a number on it with a felt tip pen, so that you know which plug each wire goes to. Number the same as each cylinder. I don't do this, I know where they go, but at times, even I get confused.

Pull the plugs first, leave the wires alone for now, but pull the boots off the plugs as you go along. Turn each plug, to the left, to loosen it, and then keep turning until all the way out.

Take the new plug and set the gap, with a gapper, to the specificed gap, and put on the washer, and put it in the hole, tighten up carefully, do not cross thread them. If it acts like it is binding while going in, come back out, your are cross threading. Aluminum engines cross thread easily and being soft metal, can ruin the threads inside the hole. Tighten the plug snugly but do not over tighten, you can break the plug.

Gap each plug before you put it in. Do not use oil on the threads. Once you get all the plugs back into their prospective holes, then you can start on the wires. Remove only one at a time, and replace it with a new one. Then do another one, and replace it. Until you got them all.

If you jump the gun and take them all off, you could be trying to remember where they went. When you are done, check your firing sequence, starting with number one on the distributor cap and going around in the direction of fire.

It would be a good idea to find the fire sequence before you start and write it down, along with which way the distributor turns, and mark number 1 on the distributor so you know where to start when you check the firing order.

For instance, on a 6 cyclinder (some, not all) 1 5 3 6 2 4 is the firing order. You would start with number 1, go around clockwise, next would be 5, then 3 and so on. And of course, number one would go to number one plug, near the front of the engine, 5 would be next to last near the back.

this was a quick lesson, and depending on your car, it could be easy or very hard. So take your time, figure out what needs to be done, and do it. There are manuals in libraries, usually, that will help. You need to know the gap for the plugs, to set them.

    Good luck and have fun.
