can you advise what tools, is it straight forward, my car batter is currently totally flat. How to change a battery on a 306 diesel car.?It is easier to charge the battery using some jump leads and leaving the battery in the car. If you have already tried this all you need is an 8%26quot; adjustable spanner or suitable sized socket set.(14mm I think). How to change a battery on a 306 diesel car.?All it needs is a couple of spanners, but to be honest, I'd go to a fast-fit centre of some sort. The priority for tools is:

    Socket

    Ring Spanner

    OJ Spanner

    Adjustable Spanner

    Pliers

Adjustables are the last resort, or close to it. Use the right tool for the right job - or collect your hat and spurs and play with the other cowboys.

Any simple tool kit will suffice, ensure you grease the terminals with vaseline/petroleum jelly after fitting the battery - make sure the top of the battery is dry and any breathers are attatched.

How to check which cell has a problem in a car battery?

I changed my car battery last year. But in this winter, the battery keeps being drained. I had the people from whom I bought the battery from checked it. they said somewhere is draining the battery.

Now I had the battery checked by a service dealer. They said one of the cells in the battery is bad.

How can I tell who is telling the truth? Is there a way I myself can check the battery? How to tell a cell in the battery is good or not?

BTW, I think I am pretty technical oriented and like to buy some small tools to do it.

Your input to the question is highly appreciated. How to check which cell has a problem in a car battery? You can buy a battery tester and check yourself, if the battery is not sealed when it is fully charged remove the covers or screw plugs and tap along side of battery with handle of screw driver not the sharp end, you will notice bubbles rising in the cells if they are ok, if there are no bubbles that cell is dead and you will have to replace batteryHow to check which cell has a problem in a car battery?Really you can't. The battery case is sealed. So just get another battery. You can't revive 1 cell, just replace itHow to check which cell has a problem in a car battery?Single cells don't usually break down in a car battery; if they do, you can usually tell by the lower level of water in it. Maybe you'd like to check the level(s) first, if necessary, refill with de-ionized water, then check the density of the water/acid mixture with an areometer, these are rather inexpensive. Try to recharge the battery overnight, making sure not to overcharge it, then check again. Next, however, make sure your generator works properly; very often, a faulty generator causes such problems.

GOOD LUCK!How to check which cell has a problem in a car battery?A battery usually doesn't go bad in just one year. If it is low repeatedly, it usually means the alternator is failing to keep it charged. But that should be signalled by your %26quot;Battery%26quot; or %26quot;Alternator%26quot; warning light staying on all the time on the dash. Or it's trying to charge but there is corrosion on the battery connections blocking the flow of current. You can disconnect the battery and look at the connections and see if there is clean shiny metal to make contact, or if they are covered with discolored corrosion. There is a special double wire brush ($3.50 at Walmart or the parts store) that does sa good job. The battery installer probably took care of that when they did the battery.

If the dealer said one of the cells is bad, they could have shown you how they arrived at that conclusion, maybe by testing the cells individually with a battery tester (hygrometer-not expensive), which you can do yourself if the cell caps on top of the battery can be removed. Be careful! You're dealing with sulfuric acid! Check the fluids per the directions and rinse the tester off and out, and don't drip it on the carpet or your clothes or hands or shoes! Having a cheap container of water at hand to rinse it in would be a good idea.

You can test the alternator by using a VOM (Radio Shack or Sears or Harbor Freight, under $10) on the battery terminals, set to the smallest Voltage scale. It should read 12.5V, or 13.2V, or something like that. Then start the car (which drains the battery a little) and measure again quickly, while the alternator is pumping current back into the battery using a higher voltage. It should read a volt or two higher than before, for a few minutes, anyway. If it doesn't, the alternator may need changing. A large auto parts store will test it for free, Advance Auto, for one, will test it while it's still on the car. Of course, I had a Toyota Corolla once that wouldn't charge, and it turned out that a lone wire running down beside the engine, with an in-line fuse holder that was completely corroded, was at fault.

    Wish you the best!

MikeHow to check which cell has a problem in a car battery?Assuming your battery isn't sealed, (I know mine aren't) you can check for a dead cell by a specific gravity test. They sell the testers (hydrometer) real cheap. They suck up the fluid from each individual cell so you can compare them. If you have one that's more than .050 lower than the next lowest one, that cell's dead.

Checking for a drain, if you have an ammeter, connect it between the negative battery terminal and post with everything off. It shouldn't read more than about 250 mA. If it doesn't have auto-range, be careful not to open the door, or accidentally honk the horn.

If all you have is a 12 volt test light, you can make sure it goes off after you unplug fuses for everything that should have a drain, like ECM, radio, BCM if equipped, etc.. If it doesn't go off after that, keep unplugging stuff until it does, to isolate which circuit.

P.S. also take out the bulb on the under-hood lamp if you have one.How to check which cell has a problem in a car battery? It won't do any good. If the battery's bad, you need a new one. You can take the battery to a parts store and have it tested for free or put the battery in another car and see if it does the same thing.

  • Replacing car battery?

This will sound like a really dumb question but please bear with me.

I am going to change my car battery, however, I bought the battery new from the store and it has a plasticcovering which I can't get off as well as a plastic handle over it. How the heck do I take these off so I can replace the car battery?

Also...I have a 2002 Chrysler Sebring, meaning I can't access the battery from the hood. I have to take off my left front wheel and am I supposed to just rip the fasteners out? They are in there pretty tight.

Any help would be a million times appreciated, thanks a lot.Replacing car battery? If the plastic cover is just a shrink wrap, use a knife or razor blade to carefully cut it open. If the handle is in the way you can cut that off also.

The wheel well cover is held on with plastic fasteners that you can carefully pry out. They make a tool for them, but you can also use two small screwdrivers to pull them off. Save the fasteners, because you will need to push them back on when you reinstall the cover.

Make sure that you have the car securely supported (not on the jack alone) before you start to work under the car.

The poster who says that you can access the battery from under the hood is obviously not aware of the location of the battery on that model vehicle.Replacing car battery?First off you shouldn't have to replace your battery through your wheel well. Just open the hood and access it from there. The plastic covering on the battery is supposed to be there! I have a toyota corolla 2000 vvti gs and has done 57000 mileage, can someone also recommend whom shall i get my first service with i.e. private garage or from toyota. Pls guide me to get this car working properly without having any issues. this is my first car in the UK and its a shame the battery has gone flat. a brief guide of how to dismantle the battery from the car and charge it would be great and also some basic tips to maintain a car. Also pls suggest me if i should go with Toyota dealer for servicing or private. thanks a lotCan someone please describe how to dismantle a car battery and charge it with black and decker recharger pls?you really dont want to dismantle the battery, there isnt really a whole lot of good that will come of it, especially if you are trying to figure out how to do it on here. the battery probably just needs to be re-charged, but if it only sat for a month, you might have an electrical issue with the car causing a constant battery drain. it shouldnt do that, unless of course you left the light on or something like that. a battery here in the states would probably set you back any where from 50 to 100 dollars, and install would be free. try to find an auto parts store and ask if they can charge and test, most around here do it for free anyway.

as far as service, you might be better off going to the dealership and have them service it for you, make sure everything is right and then you could start doing maitnence yourself. chiltons, or haynes makes good manuels for vehicles, i would suggest buying one befor you do any work yourself. save you a lot of time and money. good luckCan someone please describe how to dismantle a car battery and charge it with black and decker recharger pls?You can charge the battery it in the car. Sorry.I just change the battery of my Lexus 1994 ES 300 car, after changing the battery, the odometer change to 9999?This is a dealer issue. (If you could reset it yourself many people would) It may or may not be worth the cost to fix it. Your car is 14-15 years old so it really won't change the value that much. If you are not going to sell it soon it will not matter. However it is a low mileage vehicle for its age so it would add value to have correct mileage.I just change the battery of my Lexus 1994 ES 300 car, after changing the battery, the odometer change to 9999?Sounds like you will have to get a new cluster circuit board. It is not common at all for this problem to happen but I have seen this probably 2 times in the 8 years of working for Lexus. Might have been from the sudden surge of power when you connected the battery, no one will ever know why it happened.

How often should I change the battery fluid?

The battery in my car has gone dead. I talked to some coworkers and they asked if I had ever changed the battery fluid. I am kinda new to taking care of my own car. I don't know how often or even how to go about this. I can't find the drain plug they talked about and I don't see and battery fluid on the shelf at the store so I don't know ehre to get it. Any help would be appriciated. How often should I change the battery fluid?Hi. You don't change it!! On your scooter, you can, especially if it were sitting all winter, but your supposed to bring the battery inside for the winter so it doesn't prematurely fail. It is safer and easier to buy an at least 650Cold Cranking Amp battery for your car as this battery will stay strong all winter. Don't change your battery fluid because it is not worth possibly burning your skin if you spill any acid. Great question though. If your car battery fluid is low, you can top it off with water, but again it is really not worth it. Bring it to ant auto parts store for a free test. How often should I change the battery fluid?Time for a little payback. Tell them you called Die Hard, and they told you the fluid didn't need changed, but %26quot;boosted%26quot; Tell them you added some baking soda and now it's fine. In the mean time, buy a new battery. The baking soda neutralizes the acid in the battery and it won't work anymore. Oh, buy a booster pack too, and then you'll be a hero when you boost them so they can go buy a new battery! How often should I change the battery fluid?never battery are sealed units replace the battery the acid in the battery can burns if you get it on you.How often should I change the battery fluid?NEVER!!!!!! Buy a new battery! How often should I change the battery fluid? You generally DON'T replace your battery %26quot;fluid%26quot; (It's actually a fairly strong Sulfuric Acid, and will cause sever chemical burns upon contact with skin, clothes, etc..) When you battery is dead, you either jump it and see if it takes a charge from running...if it doesn't then you should have your alternator checked to see if it's charging the battery, if it is then you need to replace the battery itself (most modern batteries are sealed and require NO maintenance)

Edit: Whatever you do DO NOT listen to this idiot above me who suggest drilling a hole in the battery...MORON!!!How often should I change the battery fluid?Your coworkers are %26quot;pushing your leg%26quot; Battery fluid doesn't get %26quot;replaced%26quot; you can ADD distilled water to restore the electrolyte ( although most new batts are %26quot;sealed%26quot; ). Just buy a new battery and be done with it. But when you do, tell them %26quot;thanks for their help and say it was tough going because the Finnegan pin under the Johnson bar was in the way and you needed to remove the Gunutz locker to find that pesky drain plug. After that it was a piece of cake.%26quot; Then walk away. How often should I change the battery fluid?Buy a new one is the only answer for your situation. Dead batteries are just that dead.

PLEASE DONT TRY AND PLAY WITH THE FLUID - LIKE THE MAN SAID IT IS ACID.How often should I change the battery fluid?Dude you've been badly pranked. Older batteries required water, but now days you can't add to it. If your having battery troubles, buy a new one. You can get one cheaper if you trade in your old one.

I have a 2000 Toyota Camry and it's been acting oddly recently. My headlights randomly won't work and the light that indicates the AC is turned on sometimes flashes. Is this because of the car battery? The battery has been changed 3 times in the past 9 years or so.How often should I change my car battery? It depends on your environment.

Excessive heat or cold will put a strain on a battery.

Luckily it doesn't fail all at once.

You will first notice starting problems until it finally won't have enough juice to start the engine.

Take it into an auto parts dealer and have it checked periodically.

How long does a car battery last and how do you replace it if it's in an inconvenient location?

I'm wondering how many years or miles a car battery will last before it will need to be replaced. Also, if the car's battery is located under the passenger's seat, would just any mechanic be able to do the job? Is it a good idea to replace the battery before a failure occurs rather than when it occurs? How long does a car battery last and how do you replace it if it's in an inconvenient location?I think it's supposed to be about 5 years. Mine usually last a little longer. It's not a huge deal when it goes bad. Keep some jumper cables with you. If it can be jumped and then continues to run, it's the battery, not the alternator, which is good. Then just change the battery. If the battery is under the passenger's seat, do a quick search for replacing it. Not hard or really dangerous. One of the easiest things to do really. Do it yourself, there is really only one way to **** it up.How long does a car battery last and how do you replace it if it's in an inconvenient location?Just 4 years, you must to replace it to keep from failure.

If you have no more money or insist on 5 years, you'd better pay attention to your battery and prepare a spare one.

I don't know the kind of your car,so I can not tell you how to repair. If you don't know the instructions about your car clearly, take it to the service station is feasible. How long does a car battery last and how do you replace it if it's in an inconvenient location? You could look for a shop that specializes in batteries. There's an independent guy in my town. They can do some tests on your battery to give you an idea of it's condition and possible life. The battery may have a date code on it. Most good quality batteries will last at least five years. It's better to replace them as a preventative measure if they're getting along in age. Cold weather puts more of a demand on them to. I just replaced both of mine. One was dying and the other was getting weak. How long does a car battery last and how do you replace it if it's in an inconvenient location?Usually it costs more to replace a battery if it's somewhere crazy (i.e. not in the trunk, not in the engine compartment). But yeah...if you can replace the battery yourself don't worry about it. If you need a mechanic/technician to do it, then pre-emptive replacement might be cheaper than having to tow it to a shop. How long does a car battery last and how do you replace it if it's in an inconvenient location?Lasts 4-5 years, though 5 is kinda pushing it. I would assume any mechanic could do the job. I've always replace mine before a failure. How long does a car battery last and how do you replace it if it's in an inconvenient location?there is no way a battery should be under a passenger seat the release of fumes into the car would be too dangerousHow long does a car battery last and how do you replace it if it's in an inconvenient location?4 years would be a good guide to go with.

You did not say what kind of car you have or I would have provided step by step repair instructions.

    Always replace before failure.

CheersHow long does a car battery last and how do you replace it if it's in an inconvenient location?im not sure on the life or replacing it but i can give you all a tip turn your lights off before you turn the engine off it will keep your battery alive longer

How to get rid of car battery symbol in dash?

So I installed a brand new battery for my corolla '95. I did everything right and even cleaned the terminals so I am pretty sure that I did everything right when I installed it. My car started fine and everything but the thing is the symbol to change a new battery still shows up on my dash, so I don't understand whats wrong?

Could it be the wiring? Or does the dash need to be somehow reseted so it knows that I did put a new battery? How to get rid of car battery symbol in dash? The battery symbol is indicating that the alternator is not operating. This may be due to a voltage regulator or alternator failure. The system needs to be tested in the car to correctly diagnose the failure. How to get rid of car battery symbol in dash?Wow - I can certainly see how'd you'd make that mistake.

The battery symbol has nothing to do with the condition of the battery. They've used that lamp on some cars for 50 years, but it has always meant the same thing. That symbol is intended to tell you that the charging system (the alternator) has stopped working. A new battery could never never never never never never solve that problem. Amazing, isn't it?

I suppose if the oil light comes on, you'd change the oil, right? If the brake light comes on, you'd get new brakes. It makes sense, but it won't work. That's just not what that means, pure and simple.

P.S. - the idea you could %26quot;reset%26quot; that lamp is very funny. It's completely a dumb circuit that has no intelligence. It would be like resetting your porch light. How to get rid of car battery symbol in dash? That symbol does not mean %26quot; Change battery%26quot;. It means there is a discharge condition...as in alternator is not recharging the battery. Have your charging system checked. How to get rid of car battery symbol in dash?It may or may not be the battery.

We have a '95 vehicle as well, when you replace batteries and such a lot of the time you have to take it in to the shop to get it reset.

How much cost Car Battery Change?

I got my Car Battery replaced. the mechanic charged me $85 for the battery and labor. Was that a decent deal? How have you paid? How much cost Car Battery Change? You got a good deal. depending on the brand of battery, which you did not post, the average battery price is $55 up to $85 (for cold cranking amps and warranty), usually labor for installation is $10-$15. Sounds like you found an honest mechanicHow much cost Car Battery Change?Usually $50 is the price I've always seen. I think you may have overpaid, but I wouldn't say you got ripped off. Where are you? I got a top-of-the-line RACV battery for $100 and 2years later it ran out, so I took it back and they replaced it for nothing. (it had a 3year warranty)

I you want a semi-decent battery it'll cost you at least $50. if you buy it from a garage that price should include installation and disposal of your old one.

In your experience, how long does a car battery last for?

Mine is now over 5 years old.... in the same VW Golf I bought new from the dealership. With winter coming up...... I don't want to risk being caught out, as my friend said that you shouldn't rely on a car battery over 5 years.

However I don't like paying for something that maybe, for all I know, has another 5 years of life in it.In your experience, how long does a car battery last for?As previously stated you should get a load test on the battery and that will show you how it reacts to having a load put on it, Batteries can have an indefinate life if they are looked after correctly, most people dont know that a battery developes what is known as a profile, this is with the battery fro life and its difficult to change, so if you buy a new one you should:

Charge it at home before putting on the vehicle, although the shop will test it and it will show charged it wont be at its maximum capacity as batteries are a slow moving stock item and can sit on the shelves for months.

Every 6 months take the battery off the car and charge it overnight in a well ventilated room most people assume the altenator does all thats required thats not the case the battery provides power til the engine is running then the altenator tops the battery up to the regulator setting and then uses t he rest of its output to run the vehicles systems

If it requires it ensure the de ironised water is kept just above the plates by checking once a weekIn your experience, how long does a car battery last for?Topical question for me, since the battery in my Alfa just died a few days ago, being the original one in a car made in 2001, so 5 years is about right.

I'd change it before you get to the point where you go down to it one December morning, you're already a bit late for work, and, well......you can guess!

A battery for a Golf shouldn't be more than 50 if you do it yourself, 75 at Kwik-Fit or somewhere similar. Make sure you've got the code for the stereo though! In your experience, how long does a car battery last for?I`d say 5 years max. Its time for you to get a new battery. Don`t get stuck somewhere. In your experience, how long does a car battery last for?As some of the others have said, take the car to an auto parts store and have them do a load test on the battery. That will tell you the condition of the battery and whether it will last or not.

I drive pick up trucks and always get about 7 or more years out of the batteries.

good luck.In your experience, how long does a car battery last for?The basic rule of tumb is that batteries last about 5 years. I can understand you not wanting to replace it if it is not necessary, but look, we all know the truth, if you DO replace it, it will turn out that the battery you have now would have lasted 10 years, however, if you DON'T replace it, it will die in the middle of a stop on ice during the first big snow storm this winter.

I suggest you buy a new one.In your experience, how long does a car battery last for?Get it tested it's usually free...

Most now have a three year warranty..even the very cheap ones.In your experience, how long does a car battery last for?batteries life cant be explained but is 5 years havent seen anybody that likes to pay for uneeded expense but its better to be sure than taking a chance you could have battery load tested that will give you some sort of ideaIn your experience, how long does a car battery last for?You can have it checked at any major auto parts store. If all the cells check out and the amperage is still within specs keep it.In your experience, how long does a car battery last for?It can last as short as 2 years to ten years depends on use treatment qualityIn your experience, how long does a car battery last for?Good quality batteries such as are fitted to good quality cars last up to 6 or 7 years dependant on conditions of use - that is a politicians get out.

BUT some of the rubbish sold cheap is cheap because it isn't too good and can last under two years.

The easy check is when you start the engine does it flick into life easily or groan away for a while usually getting slower?

    Then the battery is duff.

RoySIn your experience, how long does a car battery last for?I change mine after 3 years no matter how well it works.

Have had bad experience keeping older batteries. In your experience, how long does a car battery last for?It lasts until Murphy's Law hits you upside your head when you are really needing to go somewhere, or the day after you find out you are pregnant. (luckily my husband was there)....In your experience, how long does a car battery last for?anything after 4 years is lucky, batteries today will be fine one day and just die the next. I would get a new one. U might try walmart, I had to replace my 4+ yr old battery last month. walmart has a battery EverStart MAXX very highly rated and only $63 3yr full replacement 84 mth proratedIn your experience, how long does a car battery last for?Go by the number of months the battery is guaranteed for. It is always very close and they go fast with no warning right on time.In your experience, how long does a car battery last for?It depends in part on where you live. In southern states where it is hot much of the time, batteries die quicker. Heat wears on a battery. Northern states where its cooler are easier on batteries. Mine seem to last about five years plus or minus a year or so and I live in the upper midwest. I now replace my battery about every five years. I think its cheaper to buy a $70 dollar battery than get stranded on the road and have to pay towing charges or deal with the hassle of having to replace your battery along a highway somewhere. In your experience, how long does a car battery last for?Don't ever count on battery's, a car battery can die right after you purchase it or10 Years later...as soon as it spark once all the juice (Power) is sucked out and it dies. I bought a Brand new G35 07 had to get the battery changed after 8 days, on the other hand I have a Civic 03 and haven't touched the battery once...I will recommend you to buy a new battery and register your self with the seller as of Autozone or Autopart which ever is the most famous in your part of country purchase the warenty as well its usually 3 5 or 7 years most of them do life time now depending on the brand.

Good Luck :) in the winter if your gonna drive with the same battery. In your experience, how long does a car battery last for?In my experience, my car battery died in 3 yrs (all original Honda). The lifespan should be 5 yrs. So you make the call. Anything can happen.

so, what you can do, is connect another battery, using jump leads from your friends car, (it doesnt need to be running) undo your terminals, and remove them from teh battery ,the jump leads will make the car think its still got a battery attached... (cars are a bit simple like that) replace teh battery, do up the clamps and remove the jump leads..job a good un. and it doesnt cost anything..

two words of caution; observe polatrity, red (positive) to RED, Black, to black..and it may only be 12volts, but a fresh battery has around 2-300 amps.. so much power, shorted to earth, because your jump leads touch accidentally...big flash, leading to bonfires so be careful. and good luckI need to change my car battery. I am going to change my car' battery. which one should i buy, maintenance free battery (dry battery) or liquid?

i am going to change my car' battery. which one should i buy, maintenance free battery (dry battery) or one that contains liquid and needs to get maintenance ?

    of which company ?

How longer should a car battery last ? if car gets nice tune-ups on time ?

thanksI am going to change my car' battery. which one should i buy, maintenance free battery (dry battery) or liquid?Get maintenance free battery. Interstate batteries are the best, but they also make most of them... Sears, Auto Zone, these are two that I can thank of quickly that Interstate makes and of course the Interstate brand. Battery life has nothing to do with tune-ups, etc. Most if not all have a warranty for so many years, depending on how good of battery you get. Most will only last about that many years.I am going to change my car' battery. which one should i buy, maintenance free battery (dry battery) or liquid?get what the car calls for/replace in three years and save your alt/dont over run on batt lifeI am going to change my car' battery. which one should i buy, maintenance free battery (dry battery) or liquid?According too %26quot;Consumer Magazine%26quot;, your local Wal-mart stores, sell

the highest rated batteries in the Industry, and have the best price per

    warranty around.

They wii also install the battery, for free.I am going to change my car' battery. which one should i buy, maintenance free battery (dry battery) or liquid?Regular maintenance is wonderful and the only maintenance the battery should need is to keep the battery teminals clean and check the liquid level unless it's a maintenance free battery. If you need to replace fluid use distilled water. If the Terminals look like there is a white or green substance on them use household baking soda and water to clean them. It is also best to remove the battery cables from the battery and clean the terminals. Yout local Autzone will carry a stiff brush specifically for this purpose. The best place to purchase a battery is Sam's Club or Wal Mart. They sell a good battery and they a very reasonable. They will even install it for you. All you need to remember is to get a battery in your series with the same cold cranking amps. I have found the folks at Sam's Club to be the most helpful.

Hope this helps you. Have a wonderful day.I am going to change my car' battery. which one should i buy, maintenance free battery (dry battery) or liquid?I never heard of a %26quot;dry%26quot; car battery. Most batteries have liquid or gel electrolyte. A good battery will have a 72, 84 month warranty with direct replacement for 2 to 3 years and pro-rated for the balance. I think Sears' are overpriced and I buy my coffee at Wal Mart. There isn't much difference except in CCA which is cold cranking amps, expressed as 500 CCA, 660 CCA, etc. Any seller should have the rating for your car and recommend the right battery. It is OK to exceed the CCA rating of your car, just do not go below it. Parts houses like NAPA, Auto Zone, Advance Auto, etc. all sell good batteries and some do installations. Figure on spending at least $80 for a good unit depending on your car. I wish you and your car good Zen.

I bought the battery and tried to replace it but then I got stuck.

As far as I know, it's not hard at all to replace a battery. unscrew the clamp on top that holds the battery down. Unplug negative side first then the positive side. Then unplug the ventilation hose that goes into my battery. Then the battery should come out. Well, the battery isn't budging. When i lift as hard as i can, the car lifts with it.

Mark the large wire going to the + point with a chunk of tape with a + drawn on it. Mark the wire going to the - with a chunk of tape with - drawn on it.

Loosen and remove the bolt holding the - sign wire first. You will not do any damage if your wrench is touching this point and you also tough the motor or body of the car. How often do you have to recharge or change a car battery?

Batteries usually last 3 to 5 years, though some can go on a good while longer.

The alternator takes care of recharging in most circumstances, although if you have a long spell of combined short journeys, cold weather, parking with lights on etc, without the chance of a decent run, a charge can be useful.

Changing a car battery is one of those tasks, like replacing a tire or changing the oil, that most people can do without professional help. Unlike changing the oil, however, this job does require the use of a few specific tools. Having a good wrench on hand is the most important, as batteries tend to be secured into the engine block using bolts of various size.

You will also want to keep workmen檚 gloves or even latex gloves on hand for the simple reason that most automotive engines are suffused with oil and grease for consistent operation. Finally, grab water and a rag as simple cleaning measures can go a long way toward giving you reliable performance for years to come.

Your first step is to buy a replacement battery that suits your engine檚 specs. Although most people simply read what they have on their existing battery and head to the store, you may get considerable benefit by upgrading to a different chemistry or a battery with more intelligent current management.

Some of the best-selling products in the country now contain built-in hardware you can use in the case of a dead battery, and several are specifically rated for cold weather use and the like.

Open the hood and remove both leads to your car檚 existing battery. You want to disconnect the black lead first, followed by the red, as this order helps prevent electrical shock and a dangerous short circuit. Once the terminals are disconnected, removing the battery requires that you unscrew the bracket holding it in place.

Once again, caution counts here ?although the risk of shock is minimal, you want to avoid making contact with conductive metal engine parts if at all possible. Lift the battery out of the engine by bending with your knees and supporting it from beneath ?car batteries can be astonishingly heavy! Dispose of the discarded battery at your local repair shop.

Installing the new battery is as simple as reversing what you just did. Make sure the cable terminals are clean and unobstructed first, however, as the last thing you want is for a flawless battery to be rendered useless by poor contacts. Water and a stiff brush are usually sufficient to clean these terminals, though in extreme cases you may want to try baking soda or a dedicated battery cleaning solution from your local auto store. Attach the connectors to the new battery, screw the bracket into place, close the hood and try the ignition.Does any one know how to change a car battery?remove negative

My car battery dies out, so I replace a new battery on my Lexus 1994 ES 300. After replace the new battery in my car. I turn on the engine and it work properly. The same thing happened to him. His odometer just snapped and simultaneously cut the value of the car in half (from $12,000 to $6000). He sold it to some teenager who didn't care about the mileage.

  • How often should you change your car battery and does changing car battery depend on CCA?

i just did an oil change in a honda dealer. my car is hond civic lx 2004. then they told me that my car battery was about 303 CCA and its supposed to be around 400 CCA. so its highly recommended to change it.

    1. does changing the car battery depend on CCA?

    2. how often should you change the car battery?

    3. what will happen if i dont change it?

    4. i bought the 5w-30 oil in walmart. they just used like one and a half bottle. i am so confused because the last time i did it, they used like 3 bottles. can that really happen??

    sorry if my questions are really stupid. i dont really know much about cars, so..How often should you change your car battery and does changing car battery depend on CCA?CCA's are cold cranking amps. Each battery is assigned a certain spec. I am sure with yours at 303, it's getting to the point of where it will most likely need replacement in less than 6 months. When you get a new battery make sure you get the same rating battery if the car is stock. As far as your oil, turn the car off and check the stick for proper level.How often should you change your car battery and does changing car battery depend on CCA?Do you live in a warm climate or cold? A old battery will last longer in a warm climate. About the oil what size where the bottles? Generally, most engines will hold 4 to 5 quarts with a filter change.How often should you change your car battery and does changing car battery depend on CCA?I feel sure that your auto requires at least 3 full quarts of oil for normal operation, and a complete oil change--getting rid of the old oil and replacing it with a new supply of oil--should require at least 3 full quarts of new oil. If a filter change is done at the same time, which it SHOULD be done at every oil change, an additional quart of new oil probably will be required to bring the recommended proper level of oil as shown on the dip stick. If you have a friend who knows how to check the oil level in your engine (stopped and preferably rested for a while) have him or her show you how to do it. If you have had a complete oil change along with a filter change quite recently, the oil on the dip stick should look almost as clear and it did coming out of the new bottles. You HAVE seen what new oil looks like coming right out of the bottle, haven't you? As for the battery question--there are many things to consider, such as;

    1. How old is your battery? Is the original (old as your vehicle-- never been changed)?

    2. Does your alternator appear to be working properly, by the ampmeter showing charging moderately on the (+) side of center when accessories such as air conditioning, headlight and tail lights, windshield wipers, etc. are operating and the engine is operating at a moderate or more speed; and the ampmeter goes to the (-) side center when such accessories are operating and the engine is allowed to drop to idleing?

    3. Checking under the hood, (you need to have someone with you who knows what he/she is looking for and what to do) is there a lot of corrosive build-up around the two terminals on the top of the battery (white %26amp; sometimes blueish crusty dried soda-looking deposits)? If there is, the terminals and the wires' connector clamps need, eventually, to be cleaned thoroughly and sprayed with a protective coating (you can find at Wal-Mart automotive) that will greatly slow down the build-up of such deposits again. But before you do that with the old battery. You and your helper friend find someone (if the friend doesn't happen to have one) a vlot/amp meter that will check D/C voltages %26amp; amperages. Carefully clean the tops of the two posts on the battery and check to see, with the ignition turned off and the engine not running, what the voltage and amperage readings

across the posts (the positive post should have a (+) sign stenciled into its top and also its the one the RED wire is connected to) are for the battery. If the voltage is a good strong 12 volts and the amperage capacity is a good 50 amps., I believe the batter in its present condition is good--BUT--if the battery is one of the sealed type by which it cannot be inspected for the acid/water level in each of the cells, when put to the task of turning the motor over with the starter several times in succession or for extra-long cranking times, such as in cold weather; it might give out completely when you least expect it and it is the MOST INCONVIENT time. If the battery is 3-4 years old and the voltage and amp. capacity look good but you can't examine the water/acid levels in the cells, I think you'd be wise to get a new one soon. But clean off any corrosion you find around the terminals and wire connector clamps and spray with the protective coating--old or new.How often should you change your car battery and does changing car battery depend on CCA?Why the HELL are thay looking at your battery when it was the oil you wanted changed? Sounds like a ruse to sell batteries to me.How often should you change your car battery and does changing car battery depend on CCA?For the oil, check the stick with the engine off, the end of the stick will tell you if it's full of if more oil is needed.

As for the battery, my husband (a mechanic for over 13+ yrs) said that you don't need to change it until the battery goes completely dead. It isn't going to do anything to ur engine. When it finally goes out the engine will shut off and ur windows (or anything electrical) will not turn on until you replace it. That is it.

He also says that that is the dealer trying to get more money off of you. If your battery goes out, go to ur local autozone and they will check the battery for free. If you still have concerns, I would take it to autozone and have it checked for free. They will tell you exactly what it needs by pluging a machine to ur battery. You can either leave it in the car and drive it over there or u can take the battery out of ur car and take the battery to them. They will check it on or out of the car.

    Goodluck :)

How often does one need to change car batteries? That is like asking how often you have to change a light bulb. As often as it fails. This usually happens when there is a change in the weather, usually when the weather goes from hot to cool, that is when baterys seem to go bad! And if Mr. Beans Mini failed to start he would probably tie a rope to someone else's car and try to get going that way!How often does one need to change car batteries?Battery health really has very little to do with expiry dates or scheduled replacement. The best preventative maintenance, in my opinion, would be to find a parts house with a good battery tester. A good battery tester electronically checks the overall condition of the cells. How hard is it to change a car Battery?

The battery in my car died and I don't want to have it towed somewhere just so someone else can change the battery. Is it relativeley easy enough for me to do in my parking lot?How hard is it to change a car Battery? You can definately do it! You'll need either the correct size socket or an open-ended adjustable wrench. Pliers work in a pinch...

Disconnect the negative battery cable (the black one), then the positive (red one). Just loosen the bolt that holds the cable down against the battery post, then lift the cable up and off.

Lift the battery out (there may be a screw or two holding it down near the bottom), and set the new one in it's place.

While you have the battery out, you may want to take a stiff brush and brush the white/green corrosion off the cable ends.

Make sure you have the new battery facing the same way that the old one was. You don't want the wrong cable on the post!

Then reconnect the battery cables in the reverse order (positive - red first, then negative - black).

If there were any screws near the bottom of the battery, make sure you replace those.

What are the precautions to change a car battery?

    Dear all,

First of all, how long does a car battery last? Is it climate dependent?

What tools do I need? Will a small wrench do?What are the precautions to change a car battery?A regular car battery usually lasts 3-4 years. It's pretty simple to switch out for most vehicles. I would in the very least have a 3/4 ratchet and socket set and a couple of flat head and phillips head screwdrivers.

Beyond however it's mounted in the vehicle there are two posts. Just disconnect the negative and the positive and install the new battery.

PAY CLOSE ATTENTION THAT YOU DO NOT TOUCH ONE OF YOUR TOOLS OR ANYTHING METAL TO BOTH THE POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE TERMINAL ON YOUR BATTERY.What are the precautions to change a car battery?Dear Julian C,

Car batteries do not have a specific lifespan, but most last from 2 - 5 years. Yes, climate plays a part in their durability. Extreme heat and cold will shorten their life.

Changing a battery is easy. Make sure to not wear metal objects like watches, rings, etc, to avoid any possible short circuit or electric shock. Remove the negative terminal first with a proper sized wrench (10mm is a good start). Consider wearing gloves for protection from battery acid spills. Inspect each battery cable for splitting cases or other damage and replace if needed. Make sure the new battery is secure in the car and not sitting loose, as any jostling or bumping can damage it. Spray on some battery terminal protectant, or coat the terminal in petroleum jelly to prevent corrosion from forming.

That's it. Keep the battery warranty handy in case you need to submit a claim.

Regards. What are the precautions to change a car battery? If your car is 1996 or newer, the first thing you'll need is a %26quot;setting saver%26quot; so that you don't need to have the radio security code.

    1. Get some latex gloves and eye protection.

    2. Install setting saver.

    3. remove NEGATIVE terminal first. Normally black, but you should be able to follow it to the engine block.

    4. remove POSITIVE, normally red. A big cable should go to the starter.

    5. take the old battery out. watch your fingers.

    6. put new battery in car, fasten the battery hold-down to keep the battery from tipping over and causing a fire.

    7. use wire brush to clean terminals and battery posts.

    8. Install POSITIVE first, tighten terminal so you can't wiggle it.

    9. Install NEGATIVE last, tighten also.

    10. Put some vaseline or grease on the terminals to reduce corrosion.

    11. remove setting saver. Start car.

NOTE: DO NOT ALLOW TOOLS TO TOUCH POSITIVE TERMINAL TO THE CAR, YOU WILL CREATE SPARKS AND COULD CAUSE A FIRE. Eye protection is smart, because under some circumstances, sparks could cause the hydrogen gas generated by a battery to explode. What are the precautions to change a car battery?A couple weeks of real cold weather annually (30-40 below @ night) usually tells you that a good battery will be reliable about 4 years.

Tools may vary. Match tool to the fastener. Always look away before the 2nd final connection to avoid potential explosion getting in your face. What are the precautions to change a car battery?Make sure when you are installing it, you put the hot (red) wire in place before the ground (Black). The opposite applies to removing a battery (black gets disconnected first). Also, when installing or uninstalling, keep track of where the ground wire is, you don't want it to make contact with the frame and arc unintentionally.

You might need a ratchet with a drive adapter to remove the block holding the battery in place. What are the precautions to change a car battery? If you are not sure of your battery condition go to auto supply and they will test it free.

Pay attention---remove NEGATIVE battery terminal FIRST.

Quite often a weak battery condition can be caused by dirty battery terminals.

The life of a battery can depend on many conditions including climate.

A car battery can last a very long time, but in most situations, 3 to 6 years is what you'll get.

I would recommend stopping at a Batteries Plus store if you have one near you ( http://www.batteriesplus.com )

They can either replace the battery for you or explain to you how to do it properly. They'll also take your old battery for recycling on the stop. It would be a great way to learn how to do that from a professional.... for free. What are the precautions to change a car battery?climate has alot to do with how long a battier willl last along with the kind you by the cheaper the shourter so get one that is atlest midrage for a longer life exp and make sure your battier is clamped down for the bouncing may be fun with your girl frend is deth for your battier when you change dis coneted the neg first then the possative when reconeting revirs proses and you are done
