Is it true that the old type of car battery which need to top up with battery water periodically never needs to be replace?
A friend of mine told me I just have to make sure that I remember to top up the battery water, I can use the same battery for 10 years??

Some of the sulfate gets knocked off when the alternator recharges the battery and collects in the bottom of the case. If enough sulfate collects in the bottom, it can short out the battery.
The longest I've had a battery last was 8 years. That was on an old Toyota that started the instant you turned the key and had a good charging system. It's true some people get lucky with their standard car batteries. Others crap out within three years. Summer heat scratches the life out of batteries more than Winter weather. Much depends on the condition of your battery cable connections at both ends. A good charging system between 13.5 -14.0 volts from the alternator helps also.
Age tends to build up junk on the plates within the cells.
