How can you change the charge of a classic car from positive earth to negative earth?

I have a classic 1961 Hillman Minx. I have had her a while now but getting bored of the fact the battery is connected to the body work via the positive iode, and the negative is connected to all the electrical devices.

Is there a simple way to change her from positive earth to negative? Any help is much appreciated. How can you change the charge of a classic car from positive earth to negative earth?First you need to disconnect any radio that you may have as this is going to be the wrong polarity as is any electrical clock.

Remove the coil connections ( you might need a new one but not often)

If you have an Amp meter this will need changing over later so remember this.

Now disconnect your battery and your dynamo but not the regulator.

you need to ensure that both the D and the F terminals are not connected to any cables.

1.With the ignition off change the battery connections over, you will need to change the terminals on the cables as they are different sizes too.

2. With a spare length of cable run a wire from the +ive terminal ( now non earth) to the dynamo. but dont connect it yet.

3. Ensure you have removed all polarity sensative equipment from the vehicles electrics.

4 take the end of the wire from the battery and %26quot;FLASH%26quot; the end onto the F terminal of the dynamo, Do this a couple of times and you will see a bright spark, this is normal. You have now changed the polarity of the dynamo.

5. Disconnect the earth of the battery reconnect the D anf F terminals to their respective connectors and check they are still on the regulator. Check the wiring of the coil as B will now be +ive to the battery and C will be -IVE to the breaker points.

6. reconnect battery and try ignition switch be ready to turn off if a problem.

7.Swap the +ive and -ive of the clock (check with a volt meter) and check the polarity of the Amp meter

8. your +ive earth radio is now of no use and you can sell it on Ebay, buy a modern ICE for your pleasure.

9. Check the wiring of your cigarette lighter socket as this will now be reversed and any items you had used before might need their polarity checking or changing.

Be prepared to replace fuses as there are bound to be some items you've forgotten to reverseHow can you change the charge of a classic car from positive earth to negative earth?to change the ground like that, you will have to change every electrical part in the carHow can you change the charge of a classic car from positive earth to negative earth?Reverse the battery to neg. earth, reverse the coil primary leads, reverse the ammeter leads, have the dynamo rewound to neg. earth %26amp; you should be good to go. Also, ck the radio. It may be easier to stay with pos. earth %26amp; have your accessories compatible.

Good luck. How can you change the charge of a classic car from positive earth to negative earth?changing that you will have to change everything in the carHow can you change the charge of a classic car from positive earth to negative earth? Why are you getting bored with it? What difference is it making to you? If you reverse the ground then you will effect the operation of all meters, voltage regulator and generator. Lights to really care. Neither do awitched. But all other electric systems will be affected. You are going to cause more trouble than you want. But then, modifying the entire system should bring you out of boredom. By the way, it will then no longer be a classic car in original condition. How can you change the charge of a classic car from positive earth to negative earth?Hi

PhilpP's answer is spot on.

However why do it? A 1960's radio would look great in your car. If you need more up to date things like a sat nav etc just buy a invertor (12v dc in and 230v ac out) from Maplins or a camping store. Then use a mains adaptor to power the sat nav etc. It is not the most energy efficient way of doing it but is very simple, just plug and play!

It has worked great on my old Ford for last 3 years. How can you change the charge of a classic car from positive earth to negative earth?Super full answer from Philip P above.
